In this workshop, we had a chance to share the methods each of us have used to help students become more effective advocates; to discuss what Roger Conner, Ben Shaine and Ted Whitesell have learned by using a specific framework to teach strategic advocacy; and to explore ways that participants and Evergreen as an institution might improve teaching of advocacy skills throughout the curriculum.
June 13-14, 2016:
Monday: 1:00 – 5:30 (Seminar II, A-2109)
- Ted, Roger, and Ben start out with an introduction of their hopes for the workshop (sharing pedagogy, improving the work we do, and creating a community of faculty dedicated to teaching strategic advocacy that will hopefully expand, both at Evergreen and beyond)
- Introductions, including description of each participant’s work as it relates to teaching advocacy skills.
- Make a list of topics we individually hope to see addressed during the workshop.
- Detailed look at Conner-Shaine framework (sources, how it’s been used, what has been learned, problems still being worked on, questions about it that would be helpful for the group to discuss)
- Discussion of how this compares to other approaches used by participants; exploration of how to select and improve options for our own purposes in future teaching.

Unstructured conversation, to learn more about each other’s interests, challenges,successes, plans, etc. and to allow those creative juices to flow!
Tuesday, 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM (Seminar II, A-2109)
- Seminar/workshop on the Reading from David Cortwright. Structured around the participants’ answers to the assigned questions associated with the reading. (This will allow participants to better understand how the framework is used and to be able to pose more insightful questions and critiques.)
- Discussion of topics and questions still unaddressed, with the goal of fostering strategic thinking of our own!
